Organic & Fair Trade
Fair Trade means an equitable and fair partnership between consumers in North America and producers in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The chief concern of the Fair Trade movement has been to ensure that the vast majority of the world's coffee farmers (who are small holders) get a fair price for their harvests in order to achieve a decent living wage. Fair Trade guarantees to poor farmers organized in cooperatives around the world: a living wage (minimum price of $1.26/pound regardless of the volatile market); much needed credit at fair prices; and long term relationships. These fair payments are invested in health care, education, environmental stewardship, and economic independence. Fair Trade Certified coffee is the first product being introduced in the United States with an independently monitored system to ensure that it was produced under fair labor conditions.

What is organic coffee?
Organic coffee is sustainably grown without harmful chemicals like toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers. Organic agricultural methods and materials have a low impact on the environment and these natural production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility and build biologically diverse agriculture. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic farmers abide by the law.
BuyWell coffees are certifed Organic by OCIA.

Organic farming starts with building well balanced soil, that means there are no pesticides or additives to the soil.
Organic farming preserves the farmland for the future
Organic farming does not use chemicals that can pollute our water system from the smallest streams to our oceans. As demand grows  for more organically grown food so will the economic futures of family farms and their community.

What does it mean to be certified organic?
In order for coffee to be certified and sold as organic in the United States, it must be produced in accordance with U.S. standards for organic production and certified by an agency accredited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. U.S. requirements for organic coffee production include farming without synthetic pesticides or other prohibited substances for three years and a sustainable crop rotation plan to prevent erosion, the depletion of soil nutrients, and control for pests.

What is an organic certified facility?
The BuyWell roastery is a certified Organic facility by OCIA. This means we carefully follow standards for how the raw green beans are handled and received, and how our equipment is cleaned and sterilized. Since we source only coffees with organic certification, we are proud to be 100% dedicated to Organic coffee purchasing and production.
